Put a Spell on You?

"You crazy Galatians! Did someone put a spell on you? Have you taken leave of your senses? Something crazy has happened, for it’s obvious that you no longer have the crucified Jesus in clear focus in your lives. His sacrifice on the cross was certainly set before you clearly enough."

Galatians 3:1 MSG

As I was doing my quiet time this morning, I was instructed to read Galatians 3:1-14 and when I did, the first verse stuck out to me.  I switched from my NLT translation over to the Message and read it again and was struck with the significant weight that lingered from the words.

Did someone put a spell on you?

Those seven words express the thoughts that go through my head every time I read another article about whatever evil is taking place in this world.  In the KJV, NIV and ESV versions of this verse, the word bewitched is used. Bewitched comes from the Greek word baskaino which means to fascinate by false representation or to malign. ( Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance) If that does not describe the current state of our culture in these present times, I don’t know what does. We have become a society that now calls all kinds of evil good, to the point that when I truly have to acknowledge what this world now accepts and tolerates AND calls it good, it feels unreal.  Like a spell has been cast and our minds, eyes, hearts and ears have been taken over by complete darkness.  There are moments when I cannot believe the absurdity of what I read or see regarding so many things and all in direct contradiction to God’s word. And these things are being said and done by people who profess to follow Jesus.

Yesterday my kids were texting back and forth about the latest stuff happening at Disney and the frustration of it all.  One of my kids blamed one group of people when another one of my kids said it’s “actually Satan”. There it is!  Scripture tells us that the enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10).  He comes to deceive. To turn our hearts away from the goodness of God and to focus on his agenda of darkness and sin.  It appears he is succeeding and in ways that are almost too much for my mind to comprehend, but it seems that this world has become bewitched to the ways of the Dark One.

At the end of the day, it is only the work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of those who follow Jesus that can remove that spell and awaken hearts and minds to truth.  I know God’s heart is broken to the things that are taking place in His world.  I know the Holy Spirit is grieved. He is Silent. But He is Waiting.  He is waiting for us to Ask. And so we need to start praying.  We need the Holy Spirit to awaken in us those things that break the heart of God. We have become conformed to this world and our hearts and minds need to be renewed (Romans 12:2). Transformed. It is time to start calling sin evil.  It is time we start speaking the Truth in love to those who need to hear. It is time that we wake up and take notice that scripture is coming to fruition each day that passes.
